Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, was heavily criticised in a live television debate on August 5, for his uncompromising stance on the question of which currency the country will use if it votes for independence on September 18.

Facing questions from Alistair Darling, a former chancellor of the exchequer and current leader of the anti-independence campaign, Salmond stuck to his guns and claimed a post-independence Scotland would keep the pound and enter into a currency union with the UK
