Cortisol and testosterone spur risk taking

Surging levels of the stress hormone cortisol and testosterone cause traders to take more risks and can lead to significantly higher profits (or losses), a study has shown.

BBC News reported the authors of the study carried out two experiments, which tested for the relationship between risk trading and hormone levels, for men and women.

The results showed men with higher levels of cortisol were more likely to take risks. This finding did not apply to women, where no link was found between
