Mary Jo White, the longest-serving chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is due to step down from her post at the end of US president Barack Obama's tenure in January. Under her leadership, the organisation handed down a record number of enforcement actions against companies and individuals in the financial industry.

Since the beginning of White's tenure, a total of 2,850 enforcement actions – worth $13.4 billion, and covering 3,300 companies and 2,700 individuals – were handed
