BIS: FX derivatives notionals grew slowly in late 2009

BASEL – Figures released by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) last week show total notional amounts outstanding for over-the-counter derivatives increased modestly to reach $615 trillion at the end of 2009. Forex derivatives outstanding also rose slightly, up 1% to $49.2 trillion.

This is a 2% increase on the $605 trillion outstanding at the end of June 2009, and 12% up on the $592 trillion recorded at the end of 2008. The figures show that notional OTC derivatives outstanding have
