As part of a major restructuring, HSBC Holdings announced that Sir William Purves will retire as group chairman May 31, 1998. He will be succeeded by John Bond, who has been HSBC's group chief executive since 1992. Meanwhile, HSBC Investment Bank has named HSBC's group treasurer Stephen Green as the new chairman when Bernard Asher retires at the end of February. Green will retain his responsibilities for treasury, as well as take over the investment banking role, says a source close to the bank
