US election to highlight Asian intervention issues

The unpredictability of the debates in a US campaign and their focus on US domestic concerns, means there will be "vastly more attention" on the currency peg in China, as well as intervention in places such as Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, said John Edwards, HSBC chief economist for Australia and New Zealand in Sydney.

Some US officials believe government intervention has resulted in a number of Asian currencies being substantially undervalued. They say US domestic manufacturing industries
