BANGKOK -- Rerngchai Marakanond, former governor of the Bank of Thailand, may face a fine of $1.6 billion stemming from his role in the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Thailand’s finance ministry has completed a three-year investigation into the crisis, and finance chiefs have submitted a civil law suit to the public prosecutors’ office, which lays the blame for the crisis and the ensuing economic carnage in Thailand with Rerngchai.
