Ahead of the scheduled May 7 launch date for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's new South African rand futures and options contracts, South African finance minister Trevor Manuel visited the exchange for a series of meetings with Merc officials, in preparation for the start of trading.

CME chairman Jack Sandner said in a statement that the new contracts can help address the economic risks of a new, more open trading policy, following the recent relaxation of foreign exchange controls.
