Proposed Merita/Nordbanken Merger Could Prompt Further Nordic Unions

The proposed merger between Merita Bank of Finland and Sweden's Nordbanken, which plan to combine their operations by next spring, will create the largest bank in the Nordic region in terms of market capitalization, says Jussi Laitinen, executive vice president at Merita in Helsinki. The combined banking entity will be called MeritaNordbanken.

While the merger should only have "a slight impact" on the forex market world-wide, analysts and sources interviewed by FX Week say there is
