PBoC governor hints at capital account liberalisation this year

People's Bank of China (PBoC) governor Zhou Xiaochuan hinted on March 22 that the country could take significant steps toward opening up its capital account this year, further boosting the ongoing internalisation of the Chinese renminbi.

The remarks were made during a Beijing panel discussion with International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde. The Chinese government is seeking to internationalise the RMB to accommodate the country's ascent as an economic superpower
