Derivatives market participants are said to be despairing after a European Commission official talked up the possibility of delayed implementation for the fifth and final phase of uncleared margin rules, currently set to sweep hundreds of buy-side firms into scope in September 2020.

Patrick Pearson, head of the EC’s financial market infrastructure and derivatives unit, raised the prospect of a deferral while speaking at a conference in London earlier this month, organised by Risk.net, sister
