BASLE--Banks and international regulators are stepping up the pressure for improved risk management practices and monitoring of the hedge fund and OTC derivatives markets, following the failure of Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM) last September.

The LTCM debacle highlighted the lack of transparency in the hedge fund market, which makes it difficult for banks to assess the extent of a fund's leverage. LTCM's failure also underlined the problems of pricing exposure in the OTC markets. Both
