Kick-starting the activity was interdealer broker Icap confirming it was in discussions to acquire electronic forex heavyweight EBS.

The news ended mounting speculation that the electronic FX dealing platform had been looking for a buyer since July 2004, when it appointed Citigroup as strategic advisers. The bank consortium-owned platform had since confirmed that one of the strategic options under review included a potential sale of the business.
