Jean-Claude Trichet’s career at the French Treasury began in 1976, where he became head little over a decade later. In 1992, he was elected chairman of the European Monetary Committee. In 1993 he was appointed governor of the Banque de France.

Trichet’s adherence to the franc fort strategy in the 1990s earned him the criticism of many a French politician, including French president Jacques Chirac.
